President´s voice

Colleagues and friends,
The new Scand-LAS board has worked now half a year with good spirit of enthusiasm. Many, already traditional, activities have been brought up in the board meetings: How many scholarships will there be for the next Scand-LAS meeting? Is Scand-LAS again able to support members to take part in FELASA category D education? Which local activities have applied for some financial help from Scand-LAS. Some old tasks have been warmed up: there still seems to be interest and need for working groups, especially with topics having practical value which increase animal welfare. New working groups will be established and ideas for important topics are warmly welcomed!
How about something new? Already some years ago, Scand-LAS members were asked what activities we feel important and what the expectations for Scand-LAS are. The result was very clear. The annual meeting was ranked as the number one and it seemed that members are quite happy with our society. New ideas and activities important to all members are often difficult to find and I feel that Scand-LAS already now has pretty nice member privileges. However, it is always important to try to find new initiatives – and this is also something where we all can have input. Like the idea to give two best poster prizes at the annual meeting (greetings to Denmark), which will be done at our next annual meeting in Ystad, Sweden, 2009.
The annual meeting in Ystad is really something to look forward to; please visit the webpage regularly to see the newest news, topics and dead lines. At the same time, Scand-LAS has also started to prepare even the annual meeting in Finland. That will be a joint FELASA – Scand-LAS meeting in Helsinki in 2010. The first announcement has been published and can be found also at the webpage. Go and have a look!
Although these meeting actions, other activities and our daily work have to be done, soon it will be time to take a short break. Our animals need their care every day, and so do we, too. I hope that everybody has a possibility to sit down for a while in a comfortable chair, look at the Christmas tree and just rest.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year,
Hanna-Marja Voipio
